I highly recommend the classic The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman. Explains the events leading up to WW I—much more complex than just the assassination of the archduke—and the opening campaigns of the war. Very readable, except I found the very beginning a bit of a slog. Stick with it, it gets better!
