I seem to remember reading somewhere that sessionStorage was not guaranteed to be cleared when the session closed but of course you cannot rely on any persistence. Unless maybe it was referring to the sessionStorage data may still be present in memory although not accessible through sessionStorage, similar to how formatting a disk may not wipe all of the data and some data recovery tools may be able to recover some of it.
