I think part of the problem is the number of people who decided to become writers for profit on the web—also known as content providers. It seems like an easy way to live without "getting a real job"—you know, the kind that takes work. Also I guess it is a fallback because decent "real jobs" are so hard to find these days. But if you write for passion not for profit, the needs of the market don't drive you and you have a better chance of finding your peeps. Maybe?
