I travelled a bit in Japan in the 1980s, on business. It was quite common to see people wearing masks. It seems a bit odd to me at the time, but now I understand that it is a courtesy to wear a mask when I have a cold, or flu, etc. I hope it becomes normalized in our country, too, regardless of COVID. (Meanwhile, I always mask as a COVID defense now-a-days.)
