I visited Santa Fe once in the 80s and remembered it as a charming little town. I visited again in the early 2000's with an eye to maybe retiring there. Ugh! It has just sprawled over that desert and those hills, no different than being in the outskirts of any bi city. The charming part was just a few blocks downtown, still charming, but not really contributing to the character of the area anymore. Sad. Maybe it wasn't that great in the 80s, either, but I only remembered the little historic square in the middle of town.
