In most organisations it is not the developer's job to determine which features are must have and which are nice to have. In addition (and seeming contradiction), I code a lot of nice-to-have features so that the customer says, "Gee your product is easy and even fun to work with! I will choose it over the competition!" and management winds up thanking me.
