It depends a lot on where the $113 million in investment came from, doesn't it? If it came from venture capital, then yeah, that's a pretty big initial investment. But if Microsoft put $10 billion into OpenAI, then $113 million would be a drop in the bucket from them, or for Google, or Apple, or the French government. And don't forget, at that valuation, the initial investment bought 43% of the company. That's a pretty high stake for an initial investment, and will pay off really well if/when the company makes it. If they raise another $1 billion (again, a small amount compared to Microsoft's $10 billion) before they get profitable, the $113 million investment will have already grown to a value of $430 million, a more than 400% return. So maybe it really isn't that remarkable at all.
