Must mention the 2003 Hollywood movie Auto Focus on this very subject, with a star turn of Greg Kinnear as Bob Crane and William Defoe as John Carpenter (who could possibly be any creepier?) One of Kinnear's best performances in my humble opinion. I thought it was a good movie but I guess it bombed at the box office. Subject matter just too icky, I suppose.
