Now that we can create imagery that is practically indistinguishable from reality, I'm curious about state-of-the-art video games. Their artwork is incredibly detailed and accurate, yet it is still distinguishable from reality. I suppose part of the reason may be that headline video games take years to develop, so they may not reflect the best current technology can do. But I wonder if they deliberately choose a style of hyper-realism because those of us who aren't psychopaths really don't want to spend hours and hours slaughtering completely realistic humans and beasts. On the other hand, animated movies and shows which may not involve wholesale slaughter also still have a bit of uncanny valley, not to mention those like Studio Ghibli that choose a more artsy style simply for beauty. Though I do sometimes get briefly confused as to whether I am watching an animation or a film. The backgrounds are astonishingly real but the humans still have a bit of uncanny valley to them.

Long story short, perhaps we prefer hyper-real animation and AI buddies to real-life experiences and interactions. (Have you seen the incredible 2013 film, The Congress, starring Robin Wright?)
