On the one hand, people die building bridges and skyscrapers, too. I wonder what their rate of fatalities is vs. AV incidents?
On the other hand, most of the people who died building bridges and skyscrapers agreed to take on certain risk when they accepted jobs to work on them. Whereas, AVs tend to mow down innocent bystanders. Though I suppose some number of innocent bystanders have died when a new skyscraper went up, via having things fall on them.
Building bridges and skyscrapers is a pretty mature industry, so it has had time to implement very good safety measures. The AV industry is nascent, so maybe we need to cut it a little slack. Or not. I just don't really know.
I won't even get into how Americans demonstrably do not value human life, seeing the way we handled and continue to handle COVID.
