Sure, Hitler was one of histories worst monsters, but he also was a brilliant leader. ?? It is very hard to think past Hitler’s horrible deeds and give him credit for his leadership, or any other “good” aspects he may have had. I hear “Hitler” and my negative emotions like anger, disgust, and sadness overwhelm my ability to think rationally. I beleive there is a time element, too … the comedian’s “Too soon?” I can easily hold in my mind the great accomplishments and horrible deeds of the ancient Roman empire. But slavery and the Native American genocide are so recent, and still have so much impact on the way we structure our society and live our lives today, that they bring up those negative emotions again, and it is hard for me to credit the courage of the pioneers blazing (and killing) their way west. I also feel a great deal of guilt because I was brought up and educated not understanding these things (slavery, genocide), and I regret that it is only recently that I began to become “woke” to them.
