Thank you for taking the time to compose such a beautiful response, Frederick. You really ought to publish it as a column of its own. It borders on poetry!
There is a tension between those who think doom-publishing is helpful because it motivates people toward investing in solutions by getting them to appreciate how dire the crisis is. On the other hand, there are those like you (pardon the presumption) who think it is counter-productive because it leads people to denial or despair. I believe there is merit to both positions and I am happy to see both doomful and hopeful articles and arguments.
The motive of my own writing is selfish: just to let my feelings out. I leaving teaching to those better qualified, like the authors of those books I discussed, and yourself! Sadly, I'm in a pretty dark place right now as to the fate of our society. But personally, I'm in a pretty good place as my life is going so well that I feel guilty about it. I truly hope your optimism proves well-founded and my pessimism folly. I fear we will find out all too soon.
Meanwhile, I'll have another solein burger, please and thank you!
