They went away for a while.

…my house down to San Luis Obispo last weekend and I noticed that there were bugs on the windshield. A few years back people were talking about there not being as many bugs on their windshields and this was brought up as proof that we were destroying the ecosystem.

They went away for a while. The ones on your windshield now are new once, migrated north from the tropics. (I dunno, really, but seems possible.)
