Very exciting! Michael, I wonder how HVAC and HVDC differ in fault conditions. Does one switch off more quickly than the other? Is the danger fallen power lines similar? Does it affect system load balancing?
On another topic, most electric power is generated using rotating generators, and thus is natively AC. What is the efficiency of the AC/DC and DC/AC conversion on both ends of the HVDC line? How much does that offset the advantage of the cables' higher efficiency per km?
You must know this, Michael, but for readers, these HVDC cables are quite complex, not just copper wires with a plastic cladding. I looked it up and found it rather interesting.
