We found the occasional horny toad when I was a kid in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California (L.A. area). I even remember rubbing their bellies! We had red ants, too, though fortunately I never got stung by one. I did swallow a black ant once, when I thought I could suck one up with a pipette to put him under the microscope. The things kids do!
