When I joined the industry in the 1980s, I lamented, "Technology used to be about great things. The transistor! Intetraged circuits! Computers! Nuclear power! Rockets to the moon! But now it is all just video games and consumer shit." Then things got real again for a while with networked communications, GPS enabled science and business applications, the internet, and so on. But now it seems to be back to video games (now a multi-hundred-billion dollar industry), superhero movies, and TikTok. You'd think we didn't have any serious problems on our hands. But there is important serious stuff going on as well, such as AI and biotech.
